Asa Hutchinson

Asa Hutchinson blogs on a wide variety of topics ranging from counter-narcotics and border security to homeland security and international affairs.

Hutchinson was named by President Bush to serve as the nation’s first Under Secretary of Homeland Security in January 2003 shortly after the department was created. As one of the nation’s top-ranking homeland security officials, Hutchinson was responsible for more than 110,000 federal employees housed in such agencies as the Transportation Security Administration, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

Prior to DHS, Hutchinson was appointed by President Bush to lead the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), where he combined tough law enforcement initiatives with advocating increased investment in treatment and education programs.

Before taking over the DEA, Hutchinson served as a Member of Congress from Arkansas from 1997-2001. In Congress, he served on the Judiciary, Transportation, Intelligence, and Veterans Affairs committees. In 1985 he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as U.S. Attorney for Western Arkansas in 1985.

As the Founding Partner of the Hutchinson Group, a Little Rock, AR-based federal affairs consulting firm and a partner at Venable law firm in Washington, DC, Hutchinson continues to provide leadership and guidance in the areas of homeland security and law. He travels extensively and speaks on a variety of homeland security and drug enforcement-related topics. Hutchinson is also the chairman of the advisory board for the Corporate Crisis Response Officers Association (CCROA), which helps communities leverage private-sector resources in the first 72-hours of a disaster.
