By Justin Hienz
While Dutch authorities have released the two Yemeni men arrested in Amsterdam on suspicion of preparing for a terrorist attack, the wider issue of the growing terrorist threat in Yemen remains an important topic. The Washington Post recently reported that the CIA views al Qaeda in Yemen as "the most urgent threat to U.S. security." But why is the al Qaeda presence there so threatening? A synthesis of some of the available information begins to show just how pressing the threat from Yemen has become.

We've hit them with everything we've got: troops on the ground; Predator drones in the sky; missiles from the sea; and we're taking them apart piece by piece on the Web.
By Justin Hienz
On Friday, President Obama weighed in on the continuing debate over whether to allow construction of an Islamic Center near Ground Zero in New York City. To be sure, those objecting to the Islamic Center are opposed not simply to the new place of Muslim worship but to the idea that anything related to Islam can safely exist so close to the site of al Qaeda's greatest victory, without dishonoring the dead. This viewpoint is flawed, because it is based on a misunderstanding of religion generally, Islam specifically. Now more than ever we need authoritative voices to take a stand and guide the public towards a more nuanced and accurate understanding of the Muslim faith.

By Justin Hienz
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is home to bizarre sights, and the veneer of extreme luxury certainly impresses (or fools) most tourists. But when you pull back the curtain, the UAE is revealed as a developing country with many challenges, security among them. On Sunday, UAE officials announced that it would block BlackBerry mobile services. Clearly, the UAE is striving for security in every way, but at what cost? And are there parallels in our own country that deserve a closer look? Maintaining our individual freedoms is a never-ending struggle.

By Julie Myers Wood and Dawn Lurie
A recent report conducted on behalf of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) by Westat highlighted what some employers using E-Verify know all too well – when unauthorized workers roll the dice and try to get a job, far too often the E-Verify system lets them win. The report estimates that the inaccuracy rate for unauthorized workers on E-Verify is 54 percent. 54 percent! Those are incredibly tempting odds for those seeking employment. Considering all of the improvements made to the E-Verify system over the past two years, this report is disappointing but will surely serve as a motivator for the government to place additional focus on the number of false positives passing through the system.
